An Introduction to Holistic Pulsing

 

Holistic Pulsing was developed by Tovi Browning, a New Zealand resident Osteopath whose own experience of different therapies and training in Cranial Osteopathy led her to search for a way to integrate body and spirit in a gentle and non-confronting way.  Holistic Pulsing is based on the principals of life, water and movement.

 

Pulsing is a movement-based passive bodywork, which is deeply relaxing, highly enjoyable and can take you deeply within yourself.  Movements of stretching, lifting, jiggling, shaking, rotating and swinging are applied within a matrix of soft and constant rhythmic rocking of the fully clothed, prone or supine body from which no effort is required or demanded.  

 

The rhythmical rocking and stretching movements in Pulsing create waves throughout the body, impacting on body fluids, joints, muscles and organs.  The regularity of the rhythm creates a sense of ease and flow, support and permission.  Whatever is present is allowed to surface without in any way forcing or breaking down resistance.

 

Holistic Pulsing is synergistic bodywork, it adds the power of movement to the power of touch and at mind level produces a multimode sensory experience. Alone both touch and movement can stimulate the self-healing in the body, but together they do so even more.  There is a developmental basis for the sense of relief and safety that Pulsing proves.  The rocking of a foetus in the womb, the rocking of a babe in arms, the rocking of the cradle and the self-rocking that children and people of all ages readily slip into when self-comforting.

 

Holistic Pulsing is not an alternative treatment modality geared to relieve specific symptoms, although it does have a special contribution to make to the broad trend among physical, natural and complementary therapies.  The increasing popularity of massage therapies suggests a growing appreciation of the importance for adults of being regularly touched in a caring way – in a way that is not sexual, not violent and not medical.  While massage strokes general have a nurturing element the addition of rocking amplifies the nurturing potential. 

 

Holistic Pulsing is also based on principles of caring, safety, rhythm and expansion.  It uses the power of softness, inherent to water, and an absence of force to bring to our awareness, the energy and potential locked away in our bodies.  Pulsing works on the physical, emotional and spiritual levels.

Like the pulse of music, touch can set a body mind dancing, The effects of Pulsing occur below the level of conscious awareness and will continue to be felt for some time after the session.    Often people feel that something inside them that was longing to be touched has at last been reached, the results can be profound and far-reaching.  The power of the pulse beat cuts through the hold our mind has on our being.  As a result of the treatment people experience feelings of relaxation from the inside out and of feeling empowered to be themself.

 

With good sensations in their bodies people tend to feel more human and more at home with themselves, and living more at peace within the their world.

What to expect during a Holistic Pulsing treatment.

 

A typical 1-hour session consists of gentle rocking, stretching and opening movements being applied to the fully clothed client.

 

Normally a session will commence with large or small movements being applied to the client’s hips.  For this initial phase the practitioner is checking on the movement and how it is affecting the pulse flowing throughout the clients body.

 

Transition is then made down both thighs to the knees, then feet and toes, then back up through the trunk of the body, to incorporate the arms, shoulders, neck and head. To finish off core pulsing is applied to the major chakra points.  These energy points work with the physical body to energise and return balance.

 

Upon completion the client is left for a few moments to relax and integrate the wavelike sensations that continue to pulse through the body.  During this time the client has the chance of reflection and allow deeper insights / awareness to surface regarding their everyday life.  Holistic Pulsing can be very empowering for this reason alone.

 

For client comfort or by personal choice, pulsing can also be applied in a prone or side position.
